Amma Johnson (aka AMMA JO) is a designer, singer, author and entrepreneur. Her sole mission in life is INSPIRATION. She inspires the world around her through fashion and style via the AMMA JO brand. She started her namesake women’s accessories collection with just 1 handbag and $100. Today, the brand has featured over 100 unique designs and is distributed in over 100 independent retail stores! Her mantra is… “Dreams Do Come True.”
Many designs feature her own personal artwork.
The brand philosophy is all about bringing vibrant pops of color to her audience with fun designs while bringing fun into fashion through interactive selling with her customers through online video and in her retail showroom.
Amma is an executive with a 20 year background in retail, economic development, small business advocacy and a passion for nonprofit work and community community engagement. She earned a B.S. In Marketing from Penn State and HAS worked with the university to develop innovation and entrepreneurship programs.
She began her career in merchandising, management and buying for department stores and later made a career move into the nonprofit segment in economic and community development. She spent over 20 years in community building from membership management and engagement to multicultural outreach to workforce development to building entrepreneurship programs. Her parents are immigrants from Ghana who eventually settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and her late father was a professor of electrical engineering at Penn State; her mother a registered nurse. As a first generation American she grew up with a love for culture and inclusivity.
When she is not designing, she is inspiring others through writing, speaking and singing. She hosts ongoing empowerment sessions in her showroom to inspire womenpreneurs! With over 20 years of executive management experience in retail, non-profit and community development, corporate management and over 15 years as an independent artist, AMMA JO is a true creative and brings her sincerity, knowledge and flair to everything she does.

I was told when I started my career, "You need to be a B@%ch to get ahead in your career." I couldn't disagree more. I think women have a powerful gift to lead others and this involves confidence, selflessness, and a strong desire and ability to influence others to be their absolute best. And we can do it all with compassion without the inferiority complex that causes us to self-assert- which is weakness. Strong leaders discover the greatness in others.
